Notes

Heavy cream alternatives

This recipe uses 2 cups of heavy cream, which gives the sausage gravy a delicious, rich flavor. If you find this is too rich for your liking, adjust the recipe for 1 cup of heavy cream and 1 cup of almond milk. This variation is a bit lighter and still has a great flavor.

Breakfast sausage

Look for sausage that does not have any added sugar or other unwanted ingredients. Some breakfast sausage contains sugar, so make sure to check the nutrition label carefully.

Additional Details

Our low-carb sausage gravy is a delicious and easy-to-make dish perfect for those managing diabetes. This recipe provides a flavorful twist on a classic breakfast favorite, ensuring you can enjoy a hearty meal without compromising your health goals. Made with simple, wholesome ingredients, this low-carb sausage gravy is a satisfying option for breakfast or brunch.

Sausage gravy is a traditional Southern dish in the United States, typically served over biscuits. Its origins date back to early American settlers who made the most of the available ingredients. Traditional sausage gravy is made with flour and milk, creating a rich, creamy sauce. However, our low-carb version substitutes these ingredients with more diabetes-friendly options, allowing you to enjoy this comforting dish while keeping your carbohydrate intake in check.

Details about ingredients

Each ingredient in our low-carb sausage gravy has been selected to ensure a balance of flavor, texture, and nutritional benefits:

  • Ground breakfast sausage: This provides the rich, savory base of the gravy. Opt for a quality sausage with no added sugars or fillers.
  • Xanthan gum: This low-carb thickening agent replaces traditional flour, helping to achieve the desired gravy consistency without adding extra carbs.
  • Ground sage: Adds a mild, earthy flavor that complements the sausage.
  • Red pepper flakes: For those who enjoy a bit of heat, red pepper flakes can add a subtle kick.
  • Chicken broth: Enhances the depth of flavor while keeping the dish light.
  • Heavy cream: Provides richness and a creamy texture, essential for the gravy.

Variations

One of the great things about this low-carb sausage gravy recipe is its versatility. Here are a few variations you might consider:

  • Spicy sausage gravy: Use a spicy breakfast sausage and increase the amount of red pepper flakes for a hotter version.
  • Herbed sausage gravy: Add other herbs like thyme or rosemary for a different flavor profile.
  • Mushroom sausage gravy: Incorporate sliced mushrooms for added texture and flavor.
  • Dairy-free option: Substitute the heavy cream with coconut cream or a similar dairy-free alternative to make the dish suitable for those with lactose intolerance.

Serving pairings

While traditional sausage gravy is often served over biscuits, there are many low-carb alternatives to consider:

  • Cauliflower mash: A great low-carb substitute for mashed potatoes, cauliflower mash pairs perfectly with the rich gravy.
  • Almond flour biscuits: These low-carb biscuits mimic the texture of traditional biscuits without the high carb content.
  • Scrambled eggs: Pour the sausage gravy over scrambled eggs for a hearty and protein-packed breakfast.
  • Zucchini noodles: For a unique twist, serve the gravy over zucchini noodles.

Benefits for people with diabetes

Managing diabetes involves keeping track of carbohydrate intake to maintain stable blood sugar levels. Our low-carb sausage gravy is designed with this in mind, offering several benefits. By using xanthan gum instead of flour, the recipe keeps carbohydrate content low, making it suitable for a low-carb diet. The sausage and heavy cream provide protein and healthy fats, which help keep you full and satisfied. Importantly, the recipe has no added sugars, which is important for keeping blood glucose levels stable. Ingredients like sage and black pepper not only add flavor but also essential nutrients and antioxidants. This makes our low-carb sausage gravy a practical and delicious choice for managing diabetes while enjoying a hearty meal.

Tips

To ensure your low-carb sausage gravy turns out perfectly, here are some useful tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients: Fresh, high-quality sausage and spices will provide the best flavor.
  • Stir frequently: When adding the xanthan gum and liquids, stir continuously to avoid lumps and ensure a smooth gravy.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste: Depending on the sausage used, you may need to adjust the amount of salt and pepper.
  • Simmer gently: Allowing the gravy to simmer gently will help it thicken properly without burning.
  • Experiment with flavors: Don’t hesitate to tweak the herbs and spices to suit your taste preferences.

Our low-carb sausage gravy is a delicious option for anyone managing diabetes or following a low-carb diet. With simple ingredients and straightforward preparation, this dish brings the comforting flavors of a classic sausage gravy to your table without the extra carbs. Whether you enjoy it over low-carb biscuits, cauliflower mash, or scrambled eggs, this gravy is sure to become a staple in your kitchen. Enjoy a hearty, satisfying meal that supports your health and fits seamlessly into your low-carb lifestyle.
